Our Initiative:

The Wellness Wave began as a pilot program in 2023. Back then, we consisted of a team of 4 and were partnered with only a single local retirement residency. Even though we were small, our goal was clear: provide local older adults with an exercise program that was not only physically stimulating, but mentally engaging as well.

The pilot program was a resounding success, and in the Fall of 2024 we decided to expand. Through further academic and community partnerships, our team has since blossomed to 30 volunteers and staff members, and we are very grateful to be operating in 4 residences in the Kelowna area!

Our program ensures that older adults at our partnered residences receive professionally-led exercise sessions, tailored to their specific ability levels and feedback. We have incorporated a combination of body weight, elastic bands, medicine balls, and a host of games to produce routines that provide residents with a variety of fun and challenging exercises.

Although we have certainly come a long way, we are nonetheless driven by that same original goal of providing older adults with quality exercise and opportunities for socialization.

Community Partners

Regency retirement resorts

We are honored to be continuing our partnership with Regency Retirement Resorts for a second year. Currently, we are leading programs in 3 of Regency’s Retirement Resorts in Kelowna: Summerwood, Missionwood, and Sandalwood. Our team leads have been working to build strong connections with staff and residents in order to foster a strong and lasting relationship.

Chartwell Retirement Residences

We are also excited to be partnered with Chartwell Retirement Residences, our most recent collaboration as part of the Wellness Wave. We are currently running a program out of Chartwell Chatsworth in Kelowna and have had a great time getting to know the residents and staff. We look forward to continuing to strengthen this relationship.

UBCO School of Health and Excercise Sciences

We are thrilled to once again be partnering with UBCO’s School of Health and Exercise Sciences in providing volunteers and practicum students with a hands-on community-centered experience. This program would not be possible without our wonderful undergraduate volunteers.
